How much life insurance do you need?

Use a calculator and understand the reasoning: income replacement years, major debts, education funding, and what financial protection already exists.

A simple starting point: add up your income replacement needs plus major life expenses, then subtract existing savings and employer coverage. This doesn't require precision since insurance comes in round amounts anyway; aim for enough to support your household during the years that matter most.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Estimate = income × years + debts + education costs − current savings and coverage, rounded to $5,000. This is just a reference point, not professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Income years. Most planners suggest ten to twenty years of income coverage; the right amount depends on how long dependents need support. La Mesa families with young kids frequently choose longer terms since childcare, housing and education costs peak simultaneously.

Debts. Mortgages represent the largest obligation for most families. Insurance proceeds that would eliminate it allow your family to stay or move freely without money worries.

Education. A reasonable per-child amount in current dollars. It's simpler to factor in now than to buy additional coverage in the future.

What you have. Include liquid savings you could spend down, and workplace coverage. Since employer coverage stops when you leave, count only part of it.

Once you settle on an amount, use the quote tool to see what that costs across 10 to 30 years from each carrier. Choosing a bit more coverage is typical since monthly prices are low at younger ages.
